When Katharina contacted me to schedule her newborn in home session in NYC, she wasn’t sure how cooperative her baby Mattias would be. He wasn’t a big sleeper so far and she was scared he would be a bit fussy.
Planning Your Newborn Session at Home
We planned to take many breaks throughout the photoshoot so it would go smoothly. But to both of our surprises, baby Mattias slept the entire time, with a few cute yawns along the way 🙂
We did most of the shoot inside Katharina and Marcus’s home. It had big, beautiful windows with lots of natural light, a perfect set up for me. Light plays such a big role in my photos. I love placing subjects in pockets of light and playing with shadows and contrast; the photo of Katharina and Mattias by the window is a great example of that. At the end of the shoot we quickly took advantage of the view on their rooftop and took a few photos there too.
Capturing the Emotions of Motherhood
When I shoot newborns, I’m not the type of photographer who puts them in a basket, or decorate them with cute accessories. What gets me is the connection between the parents, as well as their connection with their baby. Photographers live to capture emotions and to me this is the purest of bonds.
Obviously capturing engagements and weddings in NYC is my bread and butter, but here and there I truly enjoy switching it up and shooting an in home newborn session too!
